SMALL SIZE VIOLIN BOWS

This page last updated 1st April 2023

  1. 3/4 size, probably Chinese, 21st century. Stamped S EASTMAN, octagonal brazilwood stick, nickel mounted frog and chromed adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 59 grams. Medium stiffness. Tip face replaced, otherwise excellent condition. Plays reasonably well, feels very steady on the strings but maybe a little light at the tip for some. A good value student bow.
    Price £55.00

  2. 3/4 size, stamped 'JAEGER', German, circa 2000. Octagonal brazilwood stick, nickel mounted frog and adjuster, plated wire lapping and long leather thumbpiece. Weighs 60 grams. Medium to stiff. Good condition, but it has been straightened. This is a standard German student bow, still available new under a variety of different brands. It is reasonably well balanced, plays well, but is a little heavy for a 3/4. At roughly half the new price it is good value if it is the sort of bow you want.
    Price £50.00

  3. 3/4 size, unstamped, German, early 20th century. Round brazilwood stick, nickel mounted frog and plated adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 54.3 grams. Medium stiffness. Reasonable condition for its age, but it has been straightened. A respectable student bow which plays well enough at this price and is a sensible weight for a 3/4 bow.
    Price £45.00

  4. 3/4 size, unstamped, German, early 20th century. Round brazilwood stick, varnished red, nickel mounted frog and adjuster, plated wire lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 50.6 grams. Medium stiffness. Reasonable condition for its age, but it has been straightened. It is reasonably well balanced, plays well, but is very light and so won't suit all players.
    Price £40.00

  5. 1/2 size, German, mid to late 20th century. Stamped PAESOLD. Brazilwood stick, nickel mounted frog and adjuster, plastic lapping and leather thumbpiece. Stick length 621mm (24 7/16"). Weighs approx. 50 grams. Medium stiffness. No repairs but some knicks to the stick. Plays reasonably well, feels a little tip heavy, possibly because it is on the long side for a 1/2 size bow. Still a good value student bow for someone looking for a step up from a Chinese starter bow
