FULL SIZE 'CELLO BOWS
 

1. Stamped 'Prosper Colas' but probably German. Red-brown pernambuco stick, silver mounted ebony frog and adjuster, silver wire lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 66 grams. Medium stiffness. Only cosmetic damage (small nicks). I find that this bow plays well, but it is very light for modern taste.

2. An elegant French style unstamped red-brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, leather lapping and thumbpiece. Weighs 81 grams. Medium stiffness. The stick is in good condition but the frog has a small repaired crack. I find the bow well balanced and comfortable to play with all along the stick, but I'm not a regular 'cellist.

3. Unstamped, a probably fairly modern German bow. Octagonal pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 77 grams. Medium stiffness. The stick has a couple of small nicks, otherwise is in good condition. The frog has been repaired around one edge, and the adjuster is probably a replacement. A steady bow that draws a good sound and feels comfortable.

4. Stamped 'Bruno Heinze', a fairly modern German bow. Very pale octagonal pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, tinsel lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 73 grams. Medium to stiff. The stick is in good condition. Although light, this bow is not short of power and seems well balanced: it does require a little more effort from the player at times! This bow is also slightly longer than standard.

5. Unstamped red-brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, tinsel lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 78 grams. Medium stiffness. The stick is in good condition but the frog has had the brass eye moved forward and has been scratched during the repair. Seems well balanced and comfortable to play with.

6. Unstamped red-brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 78 grams. Medium stiffness. Reasonable condition. Seems well balanced and comfortable to play with.

7. Unstamped dark brown stick, probably pernambuco, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, black and white plastic lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 83 grams. Medium stiffness.

8. Stamped 'A Schroetter', a modern bow. Octagonal brazilwood stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, leather lapping and thumbpiece. Weighs 77 grams. Good condition, thumbpiece worn. A standard modern bow.

9. Unstamped. Flat brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog (somewhat worn by a thumbnail ! ) and adjuster, leather thumbpiece and nickel tinsel lapping. Weighs 75 grams. Medium stiffness. This is an unremarkable bow, but well balanced and plays well.

10. Unstamped. brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and replacement adjuster, leather thumbpiece and imitation whalebone lapping. Weighs 73 grams. Quite stiff. This seems like quite a decent bow, but it has repairs around the handle. The frog has been badly chipped round the edges, and the ferrule appears to be a replacement.

1. Stamped 'Alfred Knoll', a modern German made bow, French style. Red-brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, black and white plastic lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 139 grams. Stiff. Very good condition, almost unused.
