FULL SIZE 'CELLO BOWS

1. Stamped 'G Werner', modern German bow. Pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, plated wire lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 77.6 grams. Medium stiffness. The stick is in reasonable condition apart from some dents on the head, which are cosmetic only and don't affect the integrity or playability of the bow. Feels comfortable to play and seems to work well with no obvious faults, but I'm not a 'cellist,.

2. Unstamped, early to mid 20th century German bow. Octagonal pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 77 grams. Medium stiffness. Repairs to the frog, including pearl eyes, new tip face and straightened. The stick has several small nicks, otherwise is in good condition. The adjuster is a replacement of similar style and age. A steady bow that draws a good sound and feels comfortable (as far as a violin player can judge).

3. Unstamped lightly figured snakewood stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 80.9 grams. Medium stiffness. Probably French, and from the early 20th century. Seems to play well as far as I can judge, however, compared with other bows it feels slightly tip heavy. There are repairs to the frog and the nose of the bow, and it has a new tip plate and lapping. Also, for some reason, the head of this bow has been splined (and not very neatly at that). I have examined it very closely and can find no evidence of a break. However, it is priced as a repaired bow.

4. Unstamped red-brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Weighs 78 grams. Medium stiffness. Reasonable condition. Seems well balanced and comfortable to play with.

5. Stamped 'A Schroetter', a modern bow. Octagonal brazilwood stick, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, leather lapping and thumbpiece. Weighs 77 grams. Good condition, thumbpiece worn. A standard modern bow.

6. Unstamped. Flat brown pernambuco stick, nickel mounted ebony frog (somewhat worn by a thumbnail ! ) and adjuster, leather thumbpiece and nickel tinsel lapping. Weighs 75 grams. Medium stiffness. This is an unremarkable bow, but well balanced and plays well.
