  1. Unstamped red-brown pernambuco stick, nickel half-mounted ebony frog and adjuster, plated wire lapping and leather thumbpiece. German, probably late 19th century. Weighs approx. 52.6 grams. Medium stiffness. Well balanced, agile, steady on the string, gets a sweet sound but lacking in backbone for some players. It won't suit everyone because of its lightness, and is priced accordingly.
    Ref. B073. Price £95.00

  2. A light brown stick of unidentified wood, possibly pernambuco, nickel-silver mounted ebony frog, stamped 'R Metzner' and nickel-silver adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. German, mid-20th century. Weighs approx. 59 grams. Medium stiffness. Well balanced, steady at slow speeds but a little bouncy in rapid bowing, sounds well on my test fiddle.
    Ref. B080. Price £90.00

  3. Stamped Joh. Schneider, a dark brown brazilwood stick, nickel half-mounted ebony frog and adjuster, plated wire lapping and long leather thumbpiece. German, modern. Weighs approx 61.2 grams. Medium to stiff. A modern factory bow of decent quality, better balanced than some, in good condition. It's not seen much use, as it was a spare for the previous owner. A good student bow for the right player.
    Ref. B067. Price £80.00

  4. Octagonal brazilwood stick, unstamped', nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, long plated wire lapping and leather thumbpiece. German, probably mid 20th century. Weighs 61.3g. Medium to stiff. A respectable relatively modern bow, pretty average balance and feel, steady, tends to sound a little bright on my test violin. Someone (not me) got a bit over-enthusiastic with the lapping, but it will protect the stick from wear.
    Price £75.00

  5. Octagonal brazilwood stick stamped 'Dorfler', nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, plated wire lapping and long leather thumbpiece. A modern German factory made bow (probably no more than two or three years old), these turn up with various stamps. Weighs 62.9g. Medium to stiff. A very typical modern bow, the balance is slightly more tip heavy than I prefer. Otherwise, the bow is in good condition and plays well.
    Price £75.00

  6. Brazilwood stick, varnished red and unstamped. Imitation ivory frog (as far as I can tell), bone and nickel adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Early 20th century factory made bow. Weighs 62.1g. Medium to stiff. The bow is in poor condition cosmetically, but the stick and frog are sound and the bow plays well.
    Price £75.00

  7. Unstamped ironwood stick of a rich dark brown colour, nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, plated wire lapping and leather thumbpiece. Almost certainly German and early 20th century. Weighs approx. 57.2 grams. Medium to soft. Reasonable condition overall, the bow has been straightened and the stick has been stamped with what is probably a school stock number. Plays reasonably well, if you like a softish bow, and gives a decent sound.
    Price £70.00

  8. Unbranded octagonal brazilwood stick of a brown colour (stamped GERMANY under the stick), nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, nickel wire lapping and leather thumbpiece. German, probably circa 1930 but possibly more modern. Weighs approx. 60.8 grams. Medium stiffness. Reasonable condition but has been straightened. An unremarkable but perfectly useable and typical student bow, with sensible balance and no oddities of sound on my test violin.
    Price £60.00

  9. Stamped 'F. FRANKEN', round brazilwood stick of a mid brown colour , nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster (not original), imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Probably early 20th century and German. Weighs approx. 57.7 grams. Medium stiffness. No repairs to the stick, as far as I can see, tip face and lapping are new. A student bow, reasonably balanced but a little bouncy. May suit players who find the modern Chinese student bows too stiff and tip heavy.
    Price £50.00
  10. Unstamped, brazilwood stick , nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Probably early or mid 20th century and German. Weighs approx. 62.6 grams. Stiff. No repairs to the stick, as far as I can see. Another typical student bow, balance maybe a little tip-heavy for some. Seems steady enough at all speeds. Sound is reasonable, not as coarse / edgy as most cheap stiff bows.
    Price £50.00
  11. Unstamped, brazilwood stick , nickel mounted ebony frog and adjuster, imitation whalebone lapping and leather thumbpiece. Probably German, mid-20th century. Weighs approx. 63.2 grams. Medium stiffness. No repairs to the stick or frog, as far as I can see. A typical student bow, reasonably balanced and agile. Seems steady enough at all speeds. Sound is reasonable, not coarse or edgy on my test violin.
    Price £50.00
